A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” affirmed the national leader.
The official announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the year before. This project was intimately linked to his government's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were built at an accelerated pace, defying forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party called for an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This halt was suggested pending a full technical review. The party stated that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."
In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in total accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and running of these national projects.
