Critical Role Season Four Introduces the Soldiers Table

Since the launch of the fourth campaign, new Dungeon Master Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept fans guessing with deep backstory, a diverse cast of characters, and a gripping narrative featuring celestial beings, fiends, and malevolent powers growing in influence within Dol-Makjar.

Warning: Revealing details for Episode 3 of the new season lie ahead.

The Warrior Group Introduced

The third episode finished on a dramatic pause and revealed the premier party of characters who will branch out from the main group to begin their independent quest, distinct from the other two tables.

The combat-focused team includes the determined fighter (played by the voice actor), the agile character (Laura), the fierce warrior (Whitney), Wicander (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie).

Dividing the Cast

Considering 13 cast members, it was clear from the beginning that keeping everyone at one table would be impossible.

This explains, the first four episodes of the new season serve as an Prelude, weaving together the personal journeys before branching into three smaller tables: Warriors, Strategists, and Questers.

The Nature of the Warrior Group

According to the Dungeon Master, the Soldiers table is for adventurers who prefer a classically intense fight-heavy narrative style where peaceful solutions are rare.

Initially, figures such as the squeamish cleric Wicander Halovar might appear unsuited, but the events of the third episode show why these five characters are perfectly fit for the Soldiers table.

Why They Must Go

To begin with, the party knows exactly where to proceed after a brutal opening clash with The Crow Keepers.

A former ally of Thjazi Fang—whose demise started the campaign’s events—used the foes for his own means, entering Thjazi’s hideout, striking the character, and stealing all the enchanted items to dispose of.

The antagonist then settled his obligations and ran away to a Halovar stronghouse in Gormalay, Timmony, beyond the urban center, with Teor’s brother pursuing him.

Personal Motivations

Additionally, each character has a individual motive to exit the metropolitan area:

  • Thimble, as Thjazi’s partner and best friend, seeks revenge.
  • The adventurer has experience in Timmony and warns that it is a dangerous place.
  • The strong character and Wicander, having resisted his house’s orders to eliminate Teor and instead rescued him, have no other options.
  • But, their reputation as important members in the powerful family could help the team access locations they normally couldn’t.
  • Furthermore, The fighter pledged a life debt to The savior for his rescue and will now accompany him everywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

Finally, all of them are sought by the rulers that rule Dol-Makjar for a multiple motives, making lingering locally dangerous:

  • Thimble and The hero are notorious outlaws.
  • Tyranny and The healer betrayed the powerful family and the legion of demons they are partnered with.
  • Teor is wanted dead by the clan.

This leaves them few options but to travel to the remote area in pursuit of the antagonist.

Upcoming Developments

From the recent installment’s Cooldown, we learn that the combat party will be absent in the upcoming installment, leaving the other eight cast members to form the Seekers and Planners parties.

Viewers can expect learning which adventurers will be in which group in the story’s last Overture episode, available to watch on the upcoming Thursday.
